AbstractThe excitation mechanisms of the stellar oscillation due to the interaction of the gas with the radiation are investigated according to the bisystem oscillation theory. The equation for the temporal variation in the kinetic energy of the oscillation and the expression for the work integral valid in the nonequilibrium diffusion are derived. It is found that the excitation mechanisms, which transform the radiation energy into the oscillation one, are of two types, i.e. the "modulation" mechanism and "frozen temperature" mechanism, which result from the nonequilibrium between the gas and radiation. The former is due to the modulation of the process that the gas absorbs or emits the radiation in the unperturbed state by the opacity perturbation, and the latter is due to the nonequilibrium of the gas and radiation produced by the oscillation. Through the careful examination of some previously proposed excitation mechanisms, it is found that the kappa-mechanism and gamma-mechanism belong to the frozen temperature mechanism, and the convective blocking mechanism belongs to the modulation mechanism, though their operating processes were not correctly understood before. However, no mechanism has been found in the bisystem oscillation theory which corresponds to the r-mechanism or bump mechanism, which indicates that these two kinds of excitation mechanism are not real.
