AbstractA way to treat nonconservative evolution of close binaries is suggested. Mass and angular momentum loss are introduced by means of one parameter. Detailed evolutionary computations are described for a binary of 8 + 2 solar masses in case B. It is shown that the fraction of the mass lost by the M1 component, actually leaving the system, as well as the angular momentum per unit mass carried away by the lost mass, are changed during the process of mass transfer. Both conservative and nonconservative evolutions can exist alternatively during this process. The final mass and structure of the primary at the end of the mass transfer process are independent of the choice of assumptions about mass and angular momentum loss.
