AbstractThe linear oscillation theory of stars is improved to include the nonequilibrium effects of the gas and radiation. The nonequilibrium diffusion approximation is used to accurately describe the interaction of the gas with the radiation. The concept of two thermodynamic systems of a radiating fluid is introduced to show the physical processes more clearly in the nonequilibrium diffusion, and it is completely compatible with the radiation-hydrodynamic description of the fluid. The linearized equations as well as the boundary conditions for the oscillation are derived. The characteristics of the oscillation are discussed on the assumption of the adiabatic oscillation. It is found that the equivalent adiabatic compression coefficient, GAMMA(1e), which partly determines the restoring forces of the oscillation, is some kind of weighted average of GAMMA(1)'s for the gas and radiation, and the weight functions depend on the process that the fluid undergoes. For the adiabatic oscillation, the weight functions are the pressures, pressure gradients and pressure perturbations of the gas and radiation. In the nonadiabatic case, a proper GAMMA(1e) can also be defined. But by contrast to the adiabatic case, there is a phase delay, which determines whether the oscillation is overstable or damped, between the restoring force and the oscillation. The equivalent exponent GAMMA(1e) in the equilibrium diffusion may be different from the real one by an order of about 20%.
