AbstractThis article puts forward a new method of the absolute determination for the meridianobservations in mid and low latitude areas and raises a limitation that the traditionalmethod cannot be used at low latitudes. The new method will play an important part inimproving the reference system of the fundamental celestial sphere Experimental observationswith a reconstructed ZEISS transit instrument show that the principle of the new method isright: it has less possibility in making mistakes, attains higher accuracy in determinationmakes easier and simpler operation,and raises efficiency of determining instrumental param-eters. The instrument made according to the new method needs only a small amount of equip-ment for examination and is cheaper in making.
