Understanding the Evolution and Outbursts of Cataclysmic Variables Based on Photometric Observations

Abstract

The evolution and outburst are two major topics in the field of cataclysmic variable stars (CVs). In this manuscript, I summarize some of the recent progresses of our research group at YNAO in two topics by monitoring nearly 50 eclipsing CVs and nearly 20 M-type short-period eclipsing binary stars for several years. Our scientific propose are: (1) understanding the evolution of CVs by statistical investigation of the changes of the orbital periods of eclipsing CVs; (2) investigating chromospheric activity on the mass-losing secondary star in CVs by monitoring the long-term variations of the light curve of some M-type eclipsing binaries (e.g., the detection of the most energetic flare observed in R-band); (3) investigating the properties of mass accretion in CVs by monitoring some magnetic CVs and then understanding physical mechanism that caused the outbursts of CVs.
